Hmm...HR did u say?

I am mean. Very very at times. But I cant help but laugh when I see folks with zilch experience in HR talk about their 'passion' for it. Mind you, I was one of them. Till sometime ago. I once wanted to blog about HR,infact almost decided to start one on it. Gautam does a good job and he's been in the industry for more than 5 years. So you know he aint talking through his hat. He knows his stuff.

Coming back to nubile newbies. What do u mean when you say you are 'passionate' about HR? When an employee makes you run 10 times before he fills in the appraisal form, will you still be so 'passionate'? And multiply that 10 times run * more than 100 employees. Fine. Automate it.

You train the employees and bring them to a better level. You act as a 'facilitator'. When the numbers grow, you outsource it to a leading T & D firm.

You need human resources. You chalk out the manpower planning and get down to recruitment. If it's a quaterly exercise, you do it yourself. If its a weekly one like in an ITes sector, you outsource it. But please be there for the exit interviews. Attrition is so high, HR is more busy taking care of those leaving instead of the ones joining.

Time Office and leave management are all again taken care of by automation.

Industrial disputes are better dealt by lawyers. And anyway, how many new age HR grads know their Labour Laws?

Organisation Development is handed to consultants.

Yeah if there's any ERP to be implemented,HR will chip in with their functional consultant. Ah, of some use after all.

Work culture needs to be taken care of. If each line manager and superior takes adequate care of his Dept and subordinates as per the guidelines, isnt culture taken care of at the micro and macro level too? Mind the seconds; hours take care of themselves?

So,all the HR Freaks...what the hell are you passionate about??

Well, from my personal experience and from what I have heard from friends, HR guys do not seem to enjoy a very positive reputation anywhere.Though I am sure there might be quite a few HR people out there doing some great work, they are surely the unsung heroes. Also, from what I have seen, the only thing many of the fresh MBA grads are truly "passionate" about is the pay packet they manage to bag.

I don't care!!! Honestly, while I do believe that HR can shape the Fate of the organization, I believe very few organizations have HR departments that actually do so...

But, but...what is more pressing is the fact that you mademoiselle seem to be unreachable!!! SMS me or call me or something. I have left my new number on your scrapbook!!! I am unable to get thru so please do sms me sometime...

Thanks,
- M

Only statement, which I had been making to all HR Managers, I gave exits.

"There is always a more caring, more passionate and more effective HR sitting just outside your company, and you what they just hired me"

So If I tell you really, all this HR jargon is of no use. The currency in IT industry is real MONEY which starts with M (as in I AM) and ends Y (as in Why You)

I have seen even the unsellable sell, & most prized treasures going down the drain all at the same time.

Almost all HR policies which HR publishes, all those mission statements et al, flies out of the window, when they confront a guy who is being fired coz the Business Manager of some Ivy league college didn't saw what's coming out of the fog.

One last thing I shall tell you, if you donot want to be in trouble or get cursed by any exiting employee (reason whatsoever) "Never make a promise or commit anything or ask for the same, which is beyond your personal control."

Oh k. Not that I was expecting any good reviews on HR work, but everytime I hear such rants I cant help but agree. And its not a rant without a reason.

Please continue posting your comments on HR. I'd like to hear as many as possible before making the next related post.

Those are the same lines I heard from you way before you joined your bschool. I think its a tad unfair to generalize and even more unfair to be dismissive. We all have been there, done that - mistakes included ;)

I wldn't have commented abt HR...but i have so thoroughly enjoyed ur posts so far tht it wld have been mean on my part not to comment after you had asked for it :)

so I Hated HR too, initially when i joined my first job, for obvious reason e.g why are they having all the fun for doing nothing which affects company's net?? but i realise now how it takes certain kind of people to enjoy & perform at HR... for others its the worst drudgery & its like any other department in company with its share of goals, targets, (non)performers etc... I guess one can be passionate abt an HR role only after one has reached to a SENIOR enough a position whr one gets serious policy-making to do...thrill of spotting talent...reading whr organization is heading towards...putting right people at right place..till then you enjoy learning people with due patience tht one day you 'll be affecting the company's net :P afterall business is about people..u take care of them they take care of u...

I pity you HR people. It must be bugging to run after employees with so many papers and procedures. Belive me I admire you guys.

@ PG - Back then I knew that this was the state, now I know how to deal with it. :) Testing the waters here before I take the plunge.

@ evenflow and silverine - Some respite! :))

whoa!! some discussion. hr has always been regarded as a support function. and so it is, just that this support function forms the backbone of the organisation. from formulating the vision/mission of the company to laying down policies and guideline, from penning the rulebook to managing the workforce, hr does it all. and so it is 'the' support function. and unlike popular opinion, it is not merely hire-and-fire or payroll and admin. it is more, much more.

To me HR are those bunch of people who keep running around the building with a pen in their hand and a smile that is not sure if it should creep out .
These people hop from one place to another trying to search people.
Sometimes I feel, they aren't as busy as they look like ! Do they ?
And the "passionate" people are so passionate about money and nothing else, as pointed out by many commentors already.

Well inspite of having my closest friend beset in the frivolousness that HR is, I feel they dont do a S*** towards contributing towards organisation culture, Perhaps a post on my space would in MBA-HR terms, "reinforce" my opinion...
